The Inverted Beehive (Part Two)

This one is going to be tricky...Just think of all the lies we tell children in order to get them to behave a certain way; a lie like Santa Claus. Somewhere along the line we figured that the lie is less important than the behavior it elicits. Well, I don't mean to step on anyones toes, but for our purposes here imagine that aliens are telling us lies, pretending to be angels and talking of miracles and God, because the lies (all the myths and stories) are less important than the lessons learned from them.... the inverted beehive.

The image in my head is of a large community that has two layers of administration; the community and the institution. The community is strong enough to hold and sustain its own structure; like the orthodox Jews. And the institution is integral enough that it can maintain its purpose for thousands of years; like the Catholic church. However, the image is different because there is cultural differences in the communities that cause minor structural differences, but they are all based on the same general principles. And, the higher institution that manages the interrelationship between all the individual communities is without the pomp and circumstance, is inclusive like a broader democracy, and has the efficiency of a corporation. So, you see, we are taking pieces of each and putting them together.

History has shown that there is no stronger community than the orthodox Jewish community, however, the size and advancement of this community alone has been limited by it own structure. The Roman Catholic Church is an institution that has maintained itself for well over one thousand years, but it's structure has sometimes been compromised by the fluctuating integrity of a weaker community. Democracy has been proven to be the best (but not perfect) way to achieve balance amongst a diverse population, and corporations have shown their ability to adapt to changing circumstances faster that a virus.

So, imagine a land where individual communities enjoyed a cultural structure that maintained the community rather than a legal one. Where each community was allowed its differences, but worked together through a larger institutional community whose members are elected in to office by the general public, but must have dedicated their lives to the community by taking vows of chastity and poverty (to ensure no nepotism or corruption). And as far as this larger community there would be several layers - like states and federal governments, but the reality is that there are no borders like corporations (and religion).

Yes, it is a crazy confusing image and I am certain that I didn't do it any justice here. But, just think of a beehive where the Queen Bee does all the reproducing so all the drones can focus their energy on sustaining and protect her, and switch it around so all the drones do the reproducing and the leaders remain childless so they can focus all their energy sustaining and protecting them.

fascinating

(reminds me somehow of Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, only it's been so long since I read it I can't remember why)

the chastity/poverty thing is interesting - but from childhood who would grow up to the point where they knew that was what they wanted to do and had the skills required, but were still chaste and pure: who would be able to give up what they had aquired along the way - money, possibly - but family?

hasn't the Catholic church already proven how difficult chastity/poverty are to "impose" (but I don't really want to discuss religion!)

but I'm not knocking what you've written, I like the ideas very much

:-)

ISLTV - I do not know perfection, it is just an image that is my head. Certainly it would not be exactly the same, there would be no imposition, and only for the people who felt called to it... and I would argue that even in the Catholic church, the problems are no different that other people have trying to be something they are not. There are people who follow their path, and there are people who try to follow a path that is not theirs... in all walks of life. C:)

Hello merelyme! and happy Valentines Day to you as well. C:)
